Some family history behind the picture of Orchard Farm

Orchard Farm, Dalinlongart, Holy Loch, Argyll, Scotland

The Old Parish register of Dunoon and Kilmun records the baptism in 1747 of Dun(can), son of John Gilmour in Orchyard & Isabel Maclougass.

John and Isabel were my 5th great-grandparents and Duncan my 4th great-grandfather. Duncan married Mary Mackinlay at Orchyard 29 years later, where there first child was born. Their next two children were born at Rashfield, which was a neighbouring farm a mile up the strath, but by 1785 they were back at the loch's edge at Dalalongard (left of the picture), which is a mile southwest of Orchyard. Duncan lived there for the next 50 years, and raised two families by Mary and his second wife Cathren Mckeller.

The three farms would have been in multiple occupation as was the custom at the time. For instance in 1833 Dalalongard supported 18 households comprising 123 souls.

On modern maps Orchyard is named Orchard, and Dalalongard is Dalinlongart.
